The Department promotes, coordinates, and supervises the scientific research in the following areas: synchronic, diachronic and applied linguistics; philology; European and extra-European literatures; the theory and practice of translation (fiction and non-fiction texts); the teaching of foreign languages, literatures and cultures; comparative literary studies. It also promotes and organizes the teaching activities of the BA and MA programmes it is in charge of (BA Programme in Foreign Languages and Literatures, MA Programme in European and Extra-European Languages and Literatures), as well as contributing significantly to the other BA and MA programmes taught under the aegis of the Faculty of Humanities and of the School of Linguistic and Cultural Mediation Sciences.

For purely internal organizational purposes, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is organized into 5 branches: English Studies, French Studies, German and Scandinavian Studies, Spanish and Spanish American Studies, Slavonic Studies.
